We’re all hoping for no bridge at all to Gabriola. But if we do get a bridge to our island, driving across it might not be free.
Look at what’s happening in the Lower Mainland. The Golden Ears Bridge and the Port Mann Bridge now require tolls. The Pattullo Bridge is to require tolls when it is replaced.
Drivers are encouraged to sign up for bridge tolling account if they plan to use a tolled bridge. The Province of BC has established the Transportation Investment Corporation, which collects bridge tolls. Drivers are encouraged to register their vehicles, get tracking decals for their vehicles, etc.
If the government does build a bridge to Gabriola, will our island magically escape this trend? Or will we pay both by losing our island-ness and through paying bridge tolls?
